Finally getting around to thank those who joined Ellen and I for the 2013 Daytona 500 party. We had a good turnout, including Russ and Rusty (and Rusty’s very nice GF), Bob and Carol, Gary, Roger, Janice and Mert, John and Sylvia, Lynn and his son Nicholas, and I’m probably forgetting a few. Other than a couple old friends from Ithaca, pretty much the entire group consisted of the Mustang gang. The food was plentiful and excellent as always, including Ellen’s hot Carroll Shelby chili. Some watched the race, while others enjoyed the time socializing in the kitchen and dining room. I watched only the last 20 minutes of the race, but then, it’s not about the race – it’s about getting together for a few hours with good friends and good food.
This get-together tradition goes back almost 20 years, originally held at my house in Ithaca through 2010. Suffering from a case of cabin fever, it was my idea to get a bunch of friends together from work, to celebrate the approaching end of winter, and the beginning of another race season. The Daytona race date was just the excuse to get everyone together. If you think space and seating is limited at the Vestal house, just imagine 10 – 12 guys crowding into a tiny living room, watching a 19″ TV, in a small 2-bedroom bungalow. It was just guys back then with mostly beer and chips, and everyone complaining about the small TV and that I didn’t turn the thermostat up high enough for them (hell – they were lucky I even turned the furnace on!)
I’m pleased we are able to continue the tradition here in the Triple Cities with some of the original group, and also with new friends. I had my camera ready to take pictures, but of course forgot.
For the record, Jimmy Johnson won the race, and everyone’s favorite girl driver Danica, choked on the last laps and dropped from 3rd to finish 8th. Still a good showing; we haven’t seen the last of her!
