10 Key Ford Mustang models

Autoweek – We’d have trouble picturing the world of American sports cars without the Ford Mustang, and to be honest there have been a few times during the Mustang’s 50 year history when we weren’t sure if it would survive. Thankfully, those times are well behind us, and the Mustang is with us once again, in nearly every flavor imaginable. If you told us 20 years ago just how many versions of the Ford Mustang would be on the market in 2013, we would have been skeptical. But we are now living in a second muscle car and pony car era. The Ford Mustang has been with us for 50 years, while others have just rejoined us a few years ago after decades-long absences. As the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang looms, it’s time to take a look back at a number of important milestones in the Mustang’s history.

Leaked! This is (Almost Definitely) the 2015 Ford Mustang

From the December 2013 Issue of Car and Driver

In a nation obsessed with the right now, few things have held up over the past 50 years as well as the Ford Mustang. The first pony car debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and instantly became a tent pole of Americana. Before the model officially turns 50 on April 17, 2014, Ford will celebrate its lasting contribution to the postwar-boom culture with a brand-new, much anticipated Mustang.

But the times, they are a changin’ (yep, a song also released in 1964). Ford’s American icon continues to gain offshore admirers. The Blue Oval plans to sell the next Mustang globally, and to appease overseas buyers, the car will need to be lighter and more efficient. But that’s not to say that traditional fans will be disappointed.

Ringbrothers custom Mustang to debut at SEMA

The annual SEMA show is all about featuring automotive specialty products on the market today, and the Ringbrothers are no strangers to the event. The guys are going to be busy at the 2013 SEMA show, not only debuting the redesigned 1971 De Tomaso Pantera “ADRNLN,” but also showcasing a revamped 1965 Mustang Fastback.

The Fastback is nicknamed “Blizzard,” due to its frosty-looking exterior coating of Blizzard White BASF Glasurit Waterborne paint.

Spy photo of front of 2015 Mustang

The 2015, or 2014.5 depending on who you ask, Ford Mustang will go on sale next April, on the car’s 50th anniversary. It will most likely arrive with four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines and for the first time an independent rear suspension. We’ve already seen a few spy shots of the next Mustang testing, but these pictures supplied by someone on the inside give us our first good look at the front end.

First Ford Mustang owner still has the keys 49 years after trading a Chevy

The launch of an iconic sports car in today’s world often comes with a bidding war to be first in line; witness NASCAR team owner and car dealer Rick Hendrick paying $1 million last year for the rights to own the first 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray. But when the Ford Mustang was launched in 1964, Ford went to great lengths to keep the car under wraps as part of its launch. It was just a 22-year-old teacher’s good luck that let her become the first Ford Mustang owner — a car that’s still in her garage nearly five decades later.
